microplastics

August is National Wellness Month and we’re kicking it off with a guest blog post from one of our biz besties – Trenton Sweet from Energy Fitness. In today’s blog post, Trenton gives us the rundown on Microplastics – giving us a firsthand look into his newest book: The Microplastic Plague (Now Available on Amazon!)

At Energy Fitness Studio, we’re passionate about helping people become stronger, healthier, and more resilient. We know Sanctuary Wellness Spa shares that same heart—restoring balance, reducing toxic load, and supporting real healing.

That’s why I’m excited to introduce you to my brand-new book: The Microplastic Plague. It’s a deep dive into one of the most pressing (and least talked about) health threats of our time: microplastic bioaccumulation.

Global pollution is a huge problem, we all know that. But what the human species has done to the Earth is now getting personal. We can’t hide from our mistakes anymore. This book is about the plastic in your blood, your lungs, your food, and your future.

What Are Microplastics Doing Inside Us?

These tiny plastic particles—from food packaging, water bottles, synthetic clothing, and so much more—don’t just pass through our system. They accumulate. And research is now linking that accumulation to a wide range of serious health issues:
• Hormonal disruption (estrogen dominance, low testosterone, and thyroid dysfunction)
• Infertility and reproductive disorders (PCOS, endometriosis, sperm count decline)
• Obesity and metabolic syndrome (plastics interfere with insulin and fat metabolism)
• Cancer risk (including breast, testicular, and digestive tract cancers)
• Chronic inflammation and autoimmune flares
• Anxiety, depression, and brain fog
• Cardiovascular problems and blood vessel damage

If you’ve been doing all the right things—eating clean, working out, managing stress—but still feel off, this could be a missing link.

Where Are Microplastics and Nanoplastics Coming From?

Everyday items, like:
• Ultra-processed foods (which often contain plastic residue from machinery or packaging)
• Plastic water bottles, Tupperware, and takeout containers
• Synthetic workout clothes (polyester, nylon, spandex)
• Personal care products and cosmetics
• Kids’ toys and teething items
• Coffee cups lined with plastic
• Even household dust

If it’s plastic, heated, rubbed, or degraded—chances are, you’re absorbing some of it.

How to Detox and Defend Your Body

At both Energy Fitness Studio and Sanctuary Wellness Spa, we believe in taking real action to support the body—not just avoiding toxins, but actively restoring vitality.

Here’s where to start:

Sweat More, Detox Better
• Use saunas (especially infrared) to help release plastic particles through the skin
• Exercise regularly to stimulate lymphatic flow and natural detox pathways
• Sweat. Whether you get there from the hot summer sun, a hot sauna sesh, hot yoga, or from a grueling workout-sweat is the single BEST way to detox and eliminate large amounts of microplastic and nanoplastic waste from your body

Eat and Drink Clean
• Focus on whole foods, rich in antioxidants (berries, greens, herbs, cruciferous veggies, meat, eggs, and wild-caught fish)
• Ditch ultra-processed foods and inflammatory oils
• Stay hydrated—with filtered water in glass or stainless steel
• Support liver function with turmeric, milk thistle, and lemon water
• Consume lots of essential amino-acids particularly from animal based foods – choose local and regenerative to support muscle and tissue repair and recovery

Make Easy Swaps
• Don’t heat food in plastic—use ceramic or glass
• Bring your own glass or stainless coffee cup
• Use glass storage containers instead of plastic
• Wear more natural fibers like cotton, hemp, or linen
• Use toxin-free cosmetics and skincare
