How to Beat the Thanksgiving Bloat

bloat

Thanksgiving is supposed to be cozy, delicious, and joyful — and it absolutely is — but let’s be honest: most of us walk away from the table feeling like we’ve eaten three meals and a plate of leftovers and a slice of every dessert “just to taste.”

The bloat. The fatigue. The “why did I eat that last roll?” moment. We’ve all been there.

Since Sanctuary Wellness Spa is closed Thursday for Thanksgiving and Friday as well, I want to make sure you have plenty of tools to support your body from home. And when we reopen on Saturday, we’ll be ready to help you detox, de-bloat, and reset your system so you feel human again.

Let’s get into it.

Why We Get Bloated After Thanksgiving

There are a few reasons the post-Turkey Day puff happens:
• Heavier foods (butter, salt, carbs—SO many carbs)
• Alcohol
• Sugar + desserts
• Eating quickly
• Eating past fullness
• Stress hormones (yes, even good stress counts)
• Not enough water
• Less movement than usual

Our digestion slows down, our lymphatic flow stalls, and our body holds onto water and inflammation. But the good news? You can support your system at home very easily.

What You Can Do at Home to Beat the Bloat

These are simple, gentle practices to help digestion, lymph flow, and detoxification while we’re closed.

  1. Drink warm lemon water (or add a splash of apple cider vinegar)

This helps stimulate digestion, wakes up the liver, and reduces water retention. Pro tip: Drink it warm — cold water makes the digestive system work harder.

2. Castor Oil Packs

One of my favorite at-home detox tools.
Castor oil over the liver area helps:
• reduce inflammation
• support digestion
• calm the nervous system
• move lymph

You can use a cloth pack or simply apply, cover with an old tee, and relax.

3. Gentle self-massage

Nothing fancy — just slow, clockwise abdominal massage to help move things along. Focus on:
• lower abdomen
• sides of the waist
• underneath the rib cage

This is great before bed or after a warm shower.

3. Herbal teas for digestion

Great options include:
• ginger
• peppermint
• fennel
• dandelion root
• chamomile

These reduce gas, soothe the gut, and help the body process that big meal.

4. Move a little — nothing intense

Movement stimulates digestion and lymph flow.
Great options:
• A gentle walk
• Some stretching
• Yoga twists
• A short driveway walk after meals

5. If you have a rebounder or vibration plate: use it!

Even 2–5 minutes helps move stagnant lymphatic fluid. This is amazing for bloating and post-meal sluggishness.

6. Prioritize water the next day

Hydration is the real MVP for reducing sodium-related puffiness and inflammation.

And When Sanctuary Reopens Saturday… We’ve Got You

Once we’re back open, we can take it from here. All of our services naturally support digestion, lymphatic flow, detoxification, circulation, and inflammation — the perfect post-Thanksgiving reset.

Here’s how each one helps:

Infrared Sauna with Chromotherapy

Perfect for:
• detoxing
• inflammation
• water retention
• improving digestion
• boosting metabolism

You’ll sweat out the excess sodium, sugar, and fluid your body is holding on to.

PEMF Therapy (Higher Dose Mat)

Great for:
• reducing inflammation
• supporting lymphatic flow
• improving energy
• helping digestion reset

If you feel sluggish, foggy, or inflamed, this helps recalibrate your system.

Compression Therapy Boots

Incredible for post-holiday circulation and lymphatic movement. Helps with:
• swelling
• heaviness in legs
• water retention
• overall de-bloating

Ionic Foot Detox

The perfect gentle detox after a heavy holiday meal. Clients always feel lighter, clearer, and less puffy afterward.

Halotherapy Salt Bed

Thanksgiving is often heavy on:
• salty foods
• dairy
• alcohol
• sugar

All of which can inflame the respiratory and digestive systems. The salt bed reduces inflammation, supports immunity, and helps you breathe easier and feel less weighed down.

Infrared Sauna Blanket

Same detox benefits as the sauna, but more cocoon-like. A great option if you want that deep sweat without leaving the blanket.

Massage

Our massage therapist offers:
• Lymphatic massage (amazing for bloat + detox)
• Deep tissue
• Reflexology
• Qigong techniques
• Dry cupping

Massage moves stagnant lymph, supports digestion, reduces inflammation, and helps reset your nervous system after a busy holiday week.

ExoMind Advanced TMS

You wouldn’t think brain health is connected to post-Thanksgiving bloat, but stress and dysregulated nervous systems absolutely affect digestion. If you’re overstimulated, exhausted, or overwhelmed, ExoMind helps bring your brain and body back into balance.
